Why is nurse well-being important?

In order to give our patients 100% care, it’s important to have coping mechanisms in place to deal with our own well-being. As a Nurse, if your head is not in the right place then how does your body function?

Mental and physical health go hand in hand.

How do you ensure your own well-being?

I manage my own well-being by going to the gym, and spending time with my family in the evenings and weekends. Picking up the phone and chatting with a colleague can really help, it gives us time to discuss patients and how best to plan their care.

How has Salts helped your patients’ well-being?

In my opinion the literature provided by Salts is the best available. The Salts’ You & Your booklets are so useful and informative, they are almost like a bible for the patient.

Salts puts the patient at the centre of everything they do.

This is certainly true with products such as Confidence BE®, the new Confidence BE® Urostomy and Confidence Natural. It’s also really important that patients can speak to their local Medilink® branch instead of a call centre, this gives such reassurance as they feel heard and listened to.

How has Confidence BE® helped your patients’ well-being?

Confidence BE® is one of the most innovative products on the market. The colour choice makes it feel less medical and the extra details Salts offer, such as matching belt colours, can also make a real difference. I have a patient who is a teacher, and she was very concerned about going back to work. She tried Confidence BE® and said it was a game changer, she felt so much more confident and no longer suffered with leaks.

Confidence BE® can make acceptance of their stoma easier.

How does having a stoma impact your patients’ well-being?

Having a stoma can impact both patients and their families in so many ways. It can raise social anxiety, make them worry about returning to work, and relationships can be affected due to altered body image.

Well-being is very individual, none of our patients are the same.

What does holistic well-being mean to you?

I plan my patients’ care based on their social, mental and physical needs. It’s also so important that a patient understands the procedure and how it will impact them.

Holistic well-being is all about incorporating every element of a patient’s life into our plan of care.
