Announcing the Philip Salt Stoma Care Nurse of the Year Award Winner 2023!

The ASCN UK Philip Salt Stoma Care Nurse of the year award is chosen by fellow professionals.  Any member of ASCN UK can nominate a colleague who they feel has gone above and beyond and has shown exceptional service and dedication during the year.  This year saw a total of 7 nominations, which is the largest number ever received.

We are delighted to announce that Jacqui North is the winner of the ASCN UK Philip Salt Stoma Care Nurse of the Year Award 2023.  Jacqui has worked in the speciality of stoma care for over 30 years, having started her career at Queens Hospital Romford.  Here she set up the first one stop rectal bleed clinic and developed a stoma care service that included surgical creation of stomas in theatre, and the development of a training programme for junior registrars.

Jacqui is extremely well published and has presented on numerous occasions throughout her career, both nationally and internationally.  She is regularly referenced for her work in the prevention of parastomal hernia and has helped to write ASCN and WCET guidelines.  She is also involved in national research projects, in particular on hernia management. She continues to teach regularly on this subject that remains her passion.

Jacqui has always been an active member of ASCN and an ASCN area representative. She also created the charity ‘Cradle for Life’ (set up in her garage!) that was one of the first charities to collect unused stoma product stock to send to those in need in Pakistan.

Currently Jacqui works within the community, providing care and support to those patients who are newly discharged from hospital, and she is tireless in her energy to deliver the best possible care for her patients.

Jacqui is one of the pioneers of stoma care services, she has mentored countless nurses in her subject and taught many others.  She remains as passionate about both the speciality and her patients, and fully deserves recognition as Stoma Care Nurse of the Year.
