A Place for Healing in the Heart of the West Midlands

The Smethwick area of the Black Country is now home to a fantastic new hospital, which opened its doors in October 2024 after nine years in the making. Here, we look at the amazing impact of the Midlands Metropolitan Hospital Campaign Council, chaired by Director of Salts Healthcare, Peter Salt.

The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital features world-class facilities that create a healing and welcoming environment for the local community. It’s also the new home for many of the clinical teams previously based at Sandwell, West Bromwich, and City Hospitals, combining functions for the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.

A New Era in Medical Care Spaces

Peter Salt, Director of Salts Healthcare, was delighted to be approached to chair the Midlands Metropolitan Hospital Campaign Council back in 2018. The Council’s objective was to raise £2m, which would be used to add value to the hospital through the creation of galleries, exhibition spaces, gardens and play areas; the overall aim was to welcome patients into a welcoming and healing environment with modern, comfortable furnishings and facilities.

Cutting-edge Research

The money would also be used to fund research into conditions that reflect the growing ethnic diversity of the UK’s patient population — enabling healthcare professionals to pioneer new treatments.

Three individual committees, covering Business, Community and Grants, each focused on raising money in the areas identified. Those involved came from the local area and represented a range of backgrounds, including clinical roles, local business and the Chamber of Commerce. Every quarter, the committees reported back to the Campaign Council on their progress and achievements.

Healing Spaces

The Campaign Council was thrilled to exceed their target of £2m and see the results of their fundraising come to fruition when the hospital opened its doors in October 2024. Amazing spaces have been created throughout the hospital and its grounds, offering patients the serene environment that they need to heal.

We were honoured to have our company name inscribed on plaques inside the grounds and on one of the main staircases in recognition of our support. Peter and his wife, Rosemary, attended an event in November 2024 to admire the new additions.

“I was absolutely delighted to have chaired the Council and to have this level of involvement in what was achieved — it was fantastic to exceed our aims in raising over £2m for such an important aspect of patient care. I believe a more welcoming environment will help to improve patient experiences at the hospital.”
