#ShareYourStory - Hunter

Hunter, who is 9 years old, had his colostomy formed in February 2023 and is now back to enjoying his life!

Long road to recovery

Hunter, who is only 9 years old, required stoma surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital as a result of the left side of his colon not working. After the surgery, it was a very long road for Hunter to get back to full recovery. After 3 days of waiting for his stoma to start functioning, he tried sitting and walking himself, but it didn’t work. An X-Ray showed he was still completely blocked up and was taken back down to theatre to clear this. Despite the challenges, Hunter was a trooper – he was so strong and didn’t complain once.

Always has a smile on his face!

Having stoma surgery has changed Hunter’s life for the better. He can get back to enjoying his young years – like being part of 2 different clubs at school, playing the drums and also running club/swimming lessons – all with confidence and no pain. He is also football mad! He currently plays for 3 different teams and is going through academy trials - not letting his stoma hold him back. Hunter is so much more independent and is always smiling.

We haven’t looked back with Salts

Hunter was given Salts bags when he left hospital, and he hasn’t looked back since – he uses Confidence BE® in all 3 colours as he likes to match them to his outfits. Hunter has tried others bags but felt that the look and feel were never as good.

Mum’s Mantra

The advice I would give to other people living with a stoma would be not to worry too much. I also found the pages on Facebook were very helpful, there were many people to give advice if we needed it and far more people living with a stoma than you would think! Be organised - Hunter has a set of drawers for his supplies, so he knows where everything is. Also, not to worry about what anyone else thinks! Hunter has had the biggest support with everyone he has met and is more confident than anything. Be proud of who you are
