Collaboration at the Heart of Education

At Salts Academy, we know that collaboration is key to delivering education that truly makes a difference. By working alongside nurses, universities and healthcare teams, we create learning that is practical, accessible and rooted in everyday clinical practice. This commitment ensures our programmes not only build confidence for professionals but also deliver the best possible outcomes for patients living with a stoma.

Principles and Practice of Stoma Care Module: A True Collaboration
Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do, and our Principles and Practice of Stoma Care module is a perfect example of how working together makes education stronger.

This module has been running in partnership with De Montfort University for over a decade, now entering its 12th year. This long standing collaboration ensures the content remains academically rigorous while staying grounded in the realities of clinical practice.

But the collaboration does not stop there. Each module is delivered alongside a range of speakers who bring their own expertise, perspectives, and experiences to enrich learning. Most importantly, the nurses themselves collaborate throughout the course, sharing best practice, learning from one another, and building a network of support that lasts well beyond the classroom.

Reflections and photographs from our most recent cohorts capture this perfectly: a community of nurses coming together, united in their commitment to provide the best possible care for patients with a stoma.

Back to Basics: Supporting Nurses Across the UK

Our Back to Basics Study Days are all about collaboration at every level of care. The educational events are held both at Salts Academy and at various places across the UK in the form of our roadshow, these sessions bring together ward nurses and healthcare assistants to strengthen their confidence and competence in providing stoma care on the wards.

This year we’ve travelled the length of the country from Scotland down to Cornwall, making sure education is accessible wherever it’s needed. By working closely with stoma care nurses specialists and ward teams, we’re helping ensure patients receive the best possible support, no matter where they are cared for.

Ultimately, our goal is to support patients by providing evidence based stoma care education to those working directly with them, particularly in the crucial early days after surgery. When staff are confident in their knowledge, they can instil that same confidence in patients, supporting smoother and quicker discharges from hospital and reducing readmissions. This not only benefits patients, who feel more able to manage their stoma and remain at home for longer but also saves valuable NHS resources. Early education on key areas such as hydration, diet, and practical stoma care empowers staff to share accurate, consistent information that patients can rely on throughout their recovery journey.

Through Back to Basics, we’re committed to making education accessible across the UK.

Advanced Paediatric Study Day: Collaboration in Specialist Care
Our Advanced Paediatric Study Day is another example of how collaboration strengthens education and practice. Hosted by Salts Academy and led by the expert paediatric colorectal/stoma care nurses at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, this day supports specialist nurses in caring for children and young people with stomas. The study day combines specialist knowledge with real clinical experience, giving delegates the confidence and skills they need to provide safe, effective care for this unique patient group. By working together, we are helping to build a strong community of paediatric stoma care specialists who can share expertise and best practice across the UK.

Clinical Supervision: Supporting Each Other Through Collaboration
This year, our Academy Educators, Angie Perrin and Ben Rennison, completed Level 2 Clinical Supervision training with the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT). By developing these skills, we are strengthening the support we can offer to stoma care nurses through reflective practice and professional supervision. Clinical supervision is, at its core, about collaboration, creating a safe space where nurses can share experiences, explore challenges, and learn from one another. By embedding this approach within our education, we are building a culture that values openness, wellbeing and growth, ensuring nurses feel supported as they continue to deliver the highest standards of patient care.

Closing Thoughts
The last few months has shown just how powerful collaboration can be, whether it’s through our long-standing partnership with De Montfort University, working side by side with scientists at our Skin Engagement Day, or travelling the country with our Back to Basics roadshows. Each initiative reflects our commitment to creating education that is relevant, practical, and rooted in the real needs of nurses and healthcare teams.

As we look ahead, our focus remains clear: to continue building opportunities where knowledge is shared, confidence grows, and patients ultimately benefit from the very best stoma care.
