Ben Rennison reflection on the joint WCET–NSWOC Joint Conference
In April, Ben attended the joint WCET–NSWOC Joint Conference in Canada to network, exchange knowledge, and learn from professionals in stoma care from around the world.
Ben shared the following thoughts on his experience attending the WCET–NSWOC Joint Conference.
“I recently made the journey from the UK all the way to the west coast of Canada in Vancouver, nearly 4,700 miles and honestly every single mile was worth it.
This was for the joint WCET and NSWOC conference and what a privilege it's been getting to network with so many people who work in stoma and wound care from all across the world, it's been absolutely amazing.
One of the real highlights was listening to the WCET guidelines being discussed and it's really brought home really how important it is to have that consistent, that evidence-based practice across different healthcare systems. It reminded me how much value there is in having a shared global standard underpinning what we all do on a day-to-day basis.
I also got the opportunity to listen to some genuine experts talking about managing several different things: complex wound care, fistula care and that was absolutely something else. Hearing how they problem-solve in really tricky situations and the creative approaches that they take you know with the standard pathways and when they're not enough and it's the kind of learning you just can't get from a textbook.
On top of that I got to represent Salts and myself with my poster presentation where I showcased our siting workshop and the acronym we devised to support novice stoma care nurses and this is really something I was proud of.
I think my last takeaway has to be the chance to step away from the day-to-day, connect with colleagues from across the world and come back feeling re-energised with some new ideas you know a renewed passion and a real kind of reminder of why we do what we do.”
Ben gained valuable experience from his time overseas and looks forward to future opportunities to share more about stoma education on an international stage.
