Accredited by the RCN, our 2019 National Study Day focussed on the full patient journey of receiving a rectal cancer diagnosis.

This included presentations by the following healthcare professionals covering the various steps of this journey:

The role of imaging in the diagnosis and follow-up of colorectal cancer: where have we come from and where are we going?

Dr James Stephenson, Consultant Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiologist, University Hospitals of Leicester

Surgery for rectal cancer: what operation, how and do I really need one, Doctor? Surgical options, techniques and management of complete response.

Sanjay Chaudhri, Head of Service and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, University Hospitals of Leicester

The roller-coaster has stopped – now what? Returning to life after colorectal cancer – a psychological perspective.

Dr Joanne McVey, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Deputy of Psychological Medicine, York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Love me, Love me not: sexual function following surgery.

Sue Lennon, Nurse, Educator, Therapist, Coach

The day was completed by a very special and moving presentation entitled “Nothing is certain. Everything is possible” from BBC News Presenter, George Alagiah, who has been through the journey himself.

George shared a very open account with the audience, and received a standing ovation for his heartfelt words.
